    Check which output is selected

    Audio going to a disconnected monitor, a docking station or an idle Bluetooth speaker accounts for more silent computers than every hardware fault combined.

    Check the system volume, then the per-app mixer

    Windows keeps a separate volume for each application, and a browser muted there stays silent while everything else plays normally.

    Unplug and replug headphones

    A jack sitting halfway in leaves the computer thinking headphones are connected while the speakers stay switched off.

    Try the left-only and right-only tones

    If one side plays and the other does not, the fault is a speaker or a cable, not the computer — and that is a different repair entirely.

    Restart the browser, then the computer

    Sound drivers do get into a stuck state. This is last on the list because it is the step people try first and it rarely helps.

Words you will meet on this page

Channel
One of the two independent signals in stereo, left and right. Testing them separately is the only reliable way to find a dead speaker, because music hides the loss.
Sine tone
A pure single-frequency sound with no harmonics. It is used for testing because anything you hear beyond the tone itself — buzzing, rattling — comes from the speaker.
Output device
The speaker or headset the system currently sends audio to. Sound going to the wrong output is by far the most common reason a computer appears silent.
Balance
The left-to-right distribution of volume. A balance slider pushed to one side mimics a dead speaker exactly, and is easy to knock by accident.
Frequency
The pitch of a tone in hertz. Small laptop speakers reproduce 1000 Hz easily and 220 Hz weakly, which is a physical limit rather than a fault.
Clipping
Distortion caused by asking for more level than the output can produce. It sounds harsh and buzzy, and it is why this page never plays at full scale.
Audio context
The browser’s sound engine. It stays switched off until you interact with the page, which is why sound only starts after a click.

Speaker questions people actually ask

Why does the page ask me whether I heard it?
Because a web page cannot listen to your speakers. Anything else would be a guess presented as a measurement. The page can prove it generated the tone correctly; only you can confirm it arrived.
Does this need permission?
No. Permission is required to capture audio, never to play it. Nothing on this page opens a device, so no prompt appears — and no recording is possible.
The left tone plays in both speakers.
Then either your output is mono, or something in the chain is mixing channels — a mono Bluetooth speaker, a mono adapter, or an accessibility setting called “mono audio”, which exists on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.
I hear nothing at all.
Check the output device first: audio going to a disconnected monitor or an idle Bluetooth speaker is the most common cause. Then check the system volume, then the app-level volume mixer on Windows.
The tone crackles or buzzes.
Lower the volume slider on this page and try again. If it stays clean at low volume, you were clipping. If the buzz remains, something in the speaker itself is rattling.
Why only three frequencies?
Because three answer the practical question. 1000 Hz sits where every speaker is strong, 440 Hz is easy to recognise, and 220 Hz reveals speakers that lose the bottom end. A full sweep looks impressive and adds nothing to a fault check.
Can I test headphones with this?
Yes, and the left and right tones are exactly what you need — a broken headphone wire almost always kills one side while the other keeps working. Wiggle the cable near the plug while a tone plays.
Bluetooth speakers sound delayed.
That is normal: Bluetooth adds anywhere from 40 to 200 milliseconds. It matters for video and games and not at all for this test, so do not treat it as a fault.
Does the volume slider change my system volume?
No. It only sets how loud this page generates the tone. Your system volume is untouched, which is why a very quiet result can mean either slider is low.
Is anything recorded?
Nothing. The page only produces sound; it never opens a microphone and makes no network request. The single line kept is your own answer about whether you heard the tone, stored in your browser and erasable on the data page.
One speaker is much quieter than the other.
Check the balance control in system sound settings before suspecting hardware. A balance slider nudged off centre produces exactly this and is the easier thing to rule out.
Sound works here but not in my meeting app.
Then the output path is fine and the app is sending audio somewhere else. Open its audio settings and look at which output device it selected.
