A 60 Hz panel refreshes every 16 milliseconds, so the green may already exist while your eyes are still shown the old frame. A slow panel adds a few more on top.

Words you will meet on this page

Reaction time
The gap between a signal appearing and your response starting. For a simple visual signal on a screen, 200 to 300 milliseconds is the usual adult range.
Median
The middle value once the attempts are sorted. Used here instead of an average because one bad attempt drags an average badly and leaves the median alone.
False start
Clicking before the signal. It is not a fast reaction but a guess, and the attempt is repeated rather than scored.
Input lag
The delay between a click and the computer knowing about it. A wireless mouse at 125 Hz adds around 8 milliseconds; a wired one at 1000 Hz, about one.
Display latency
The delay between the browser drawing green and your eyes seeing it. On a 60 Hz screen this is up to 16 milliseconds, and it is charged to your score, not the screen.
Simple reaction
One signal, one response — what this page measures. Choice reaction, where you must pick between responses, is roughly a hundred milliseconds slower and a different skill.
Vigilance decrement
The well-documented slide in attention over a long wait. It is why the fifth attempt is often slower than the first, and why more attempts do not simply give a better number.

Reaction time questions people actually ask

What is a normal reaction time?
For a simple visual signal, most adults land between 200 and 300 milliseconds, with the middle of that range being typical. Athletes in reaction sports sit nearer 180. Under 150 on a browser page usually means anticipation rather than reflexes.
Why five attempts instead of one?
Because a single attempt varies by roughly a third for the same person within minutes. Five gives a median that survives one lapse of attention, which one attempt cannot.
Why the median and not the average?
One distracted attempt of 600 milliseconds pulls an average up by 60 and says nothing true about you. The median ignores it, which is exactly what you want from a middle figure.
Does my monitor affect the result?
Yes, and it is charged to you. A 60 Hz screen can hold the green picture back by up to 16 milliseconds and a slow panel adds more. This is the main reason results differ between two computers and the same hand.
Does my mouse affect the result?
Less than the screen, but measurably. A wireless mouse polling at 125 Hz adds around 8 milliseconds against about one for a fast wired mouse, and a trackpad adds more still.
Why does it say false start?
You clicked before the green appeared. The wait is randomised between one and three and a half seconds so it cannot be learned, and an early click is a guess rather than a reaction, so the attempt is taken again.
Can I improve my reaction time?
A little, and mostly by removing what slows you down: sleep, warm-up, a wired mouse, a faster screen. The underlying nerve conduction is not something practice changes much, and pages promising otherwise are selling something.
Why is my result worse in the evening?
Tiredness moves simple reaction times by tens of milliseconds, and so do alcohol, illness and a long day of screen work. If you want to compare two days, compare them at the same hour.
Does age matter?
Yes. Simple reaction time is fastest in the twenties and drifts slowly afterwards, but the drift is smaller than the difference between a rested and a tired version of the same person.
Is this a medical test?
No, and it should not be used as one. A browser cannot separate attention, hardware delay and genuine impairment, and every one of those changes the number more than the thing you would be looking for.
Why does the phone give a different number?
A touchscreen registers a tap through several layers of processing, and the panel refreshes on its own schedule. Phone results are internally comparable but should not be put next to results from a mouse.
Does the test send anything?
No. It measures the time between two events in your own browser. There is no request, no permission prompt and nothing stored beyond your own best result in your own browser.
